Personal Mastery: A JOURNEY TO BEING THE BEST OF YOU

Image
In this world, you will meet a handful of people who understand the importance of nurturing a skill to take stock of their strong and weak areas in order to deal with advancement. Few are able to listen to themselves and keep their skills on a forward path. So, what is PERSONAL MASTERY? I will also term it as ‘SELF MASTERY’.  “What happens in my life is based on my personal choices and not anybody else’s” That’s personal mastery. In a couple of blogs, I have been expounding systematically on how to get hold of a solid career life. It is; however, shaky ground if you have no personal mastery. So, far are you in charge of your life? Choices about our lives should be made by our own resolve. This would enable us to change how we think, feel, and behave.   When you are able to approach life from a different perspective, then you are on a journey of constant development. Personal mastery is guided with key values like, inventive drive, commitment to what is true, learnin...

Secret to Realizing Success on Your New Job

Image
By Barigye Doreen Getting started…. You have seized what you thought was the job of your dreams. Each phase of the interview went well – you sold them on your talents and expertise, and your prospective supervisor sold you on the position and paybacks of joining the firm. He/she seemed thrilled about extending an offer. And then, with an offer in hand, it was exhilarating to give your notice (or tell your friends you’re finally employed after a long spell of joblessness!). All seemed awesome with your world.   You have now been on board a few days, a week, perhaps even a month. All of a sudden you are not so sure you’ve made the right choice. The job that seemed like a dream is beginning to feel like a nightmare. Perhaps the spot isn’t what you thought it would be; it’s either too narrow, too wide, not exciting enough, or more of a stretch than you thought. Maybe the company isn’t gauging up. Or, perhaps your supervisor isn’t the helpful, supportive mentor you supposed ...

Most Hunted Skill Sets

Image
By Barigye Doreen  I have watched our parents` generation largely work the same job till retirement. The idea of a job for life was a thing that our fathers and grandfathers did without questioning. It was the norm of their time. However, this is a story that the current generation can only listen to. Recently, it has become increasingly accepted that an individual will work in multiple work places in their lifetime. The IR Global report (2018), maps out the salient issues affecting the current job landscape where disruptive technology and gig economy top the argument. With these the notion about a `career` can no longer be attributed to a job for life. Individuals have found themselves whether by choice or survival pushed to operate independently, in activities where they contract their skills for a piece of payment instead of a monthly salary. Gig economy This refers to the free market system where organizations and independent workers engage in short-term work engagement...

Image
By Barigye Doreen There is no doubt you got all the necessary credentials for the job of your dreams. Or rather you are employed and aspire to package yourself till it best suits you. I will dedicate this article especially to you. I mean to you, who has a work placement that you don’t take for granted, you who sees your dreams moving in the right direction and to you who finds it hard, but you have the desire to make things work. I mean the person who cares and values their work.  Usually, it’s known that to excel in any given activity or sport, you will need skills, natural talents, and lots of practice. No wonder people train and practice hard to get better at any given activity. What people often disregard, however, is how important the mental, emotional attitude and lifestyle can affect performance. To cut the long story short, excellent skills need a soft ingredient, which I will call “innate stance”.  This makes much more sense when you consider how some of the better s...

How to Achieve Your Career Potential

Image
By  Barigye Doreen     Let's talk about how to plunge into the career of your dreams.  According to the Career Development Institute (CDI), a career refers primarily to the sequence and variety of work roles, paid or unpaid, that individuals undertake throughout their lives. It is also the theory which allows one to make meaning of the work opportunities and how their work roles relate to their wider life roles. Whereas a job is simply a position or role that is paid whether on a regular or contract basis. From the above definitions, I need you to realize that you can assume multiple jobs within one career in your life time. This makes the career building process a life-long one that involves forming and transforming oneself to full potential.  So, at this point, let's pause and ask this question, 'What level are you at building the career of your dreams?’ Did you in the first place have a career of your dreams? If so, I am glad about your decisiveness because...
