Excellent Performance: How Do You Keep Up?
By Barigye Doreen
There is no doubt you got all the necessary credentials for the job of your dreams. Or rather you are employed and aspire to package yourself till it best suits you. I will dedicate this article especially to you. I mean to you, who has a work placement that you don’t take for granted, you who sees your dreams moving in the right direction and to you who finds it hard, but you have the desire to make things work. I mean the person who cares and values their work.
Usually, it’s known that to excel in any given activity or sport, you will need skills, natural talents, and lots of practice. No wonder people train and practice hard to get better at any given activity. What people often disregard, however, is how important the mental, emotional attitude and lifestyle can affect performance. To cut the long story short, excellent skills need a soft ingredient, which I will call “innate stance”.
This makes much more sense when you consider how some of the better self-accomplished people you know were unsuccessful somehow because of many reasons such as being distracted or having a bad case of fears or even humbling incidences. So, how do you keep up your good game?
Let’s then enlist more precisely 5 excellent performance enhancers.
Determination
During any act; be it sports, you are subjected to an excessive measure of stress to achieve at your topmost. Look, excelling in your performance will largely comprise being able to focus in any condition. If you are incapable to concentrate on the task you are to undertake, you are more likely to flop or make blunders.
Always, the winner in any sport is often the one who retains a level head until the climax. For instance, a sprinter takes in high level stress from the point of the sound of the take-off gun to crossing the end line. It’s no secret each race requires aptitude but determination keeps you in the race your entire career.
The fact is that, you must be able to mute out superfluous feelings and provocation, and focus solely on what must be done. Great people you hear about, brave the limelight countless times amid the spot lights, taunting media and the pressure. Majority admit to being nervous before the act, but exhibit self-confidence during the performance itself. Reason being, they are able to zone out insignificant feelings to focus on the task ahead.
Self-assurance
Ultimate success comes when you believe in yourself. You can do it. Cultivate this “Self-Confidence”. Self-assurance is built up alongside the skill. A strong sense of ability can be developed when you are unquestionably certain of what you can accomplish. The more well equipped you are, the less nervousness you feel. This increases your likelihood for a boundless performance. There’s however; a time, after getting sturdy, your confidence is suddenly crushed! Certainly, that would mean dooms day for any performance.
Truth of the matter is that exceptional performance is ultimately thinkable if you are not holding back and you have given your all in all. Stay vigilant, don’t allow confidence to vamoose for when it does, you intuitively hold back and become hesitant towards the task ahead.
You are surrounded with fierce competition from players, coaches, supervisors, colleagues and even businesspersons who delight in playing mind games with their counterparts. Just don’t drop the ball while you shouldn’t. There is a time to choose that option when you need to hold on, reflect and engage with new strategies. Good luck just don’t forget to reassure yourself!
Diligence
How much more successful would we be if we were diligent? This seems to be one of the rarest notions lately. Anyway, diligence refers to “careful persistent work or effort”. It involves painstaking effort, steadily persevering and constant effort to achieve something.
The current environment has presented rare circumstances of forced unpaid leave, underemployment, and work from home, restricted travel and human interactions. All these have affected our normal routines and expectations. More than ever before, that diligent composure is required. One baby step, two baby steps and then you got it. Remember if you are diligent; you keep time, you accomplish tasks, you follow up on schedules, both you and your company will gain from it.
Moral standards
So what does this have to do with your Performance? It’s a private matter not so? Performance is a cumulative measure of efforts, attitudes and precision to accomplish a task. Your moral standards could therefore be a cancer to excellent performance. What fills the heart will eventually overflow to your embarrassment. Private time and enjoyment must be utilised with your corporate image in mind. Some individuals that cross our paths don’t have any name to protect. I subsume that yours must be protected. Habits have a way of sneaking into corporate spaces. Disassociate, reform and perform.
Keep a circle of motivated peers
You are as good as the average of the people you hang out with. Whether work peers or other friends, balance them out from motivators, to positive influencers, to challengers, to soothers. Bad company corrupts good character. This is more real in corporate environments where cheap and unhealthy talk can potentially block team work.
